Richard Bible
On June 5, 1988, Rich Wilson, his wife and 9-year-old
daughter, Jennifer, arrived in Flagstaff, Arizona, for a short vacation. The
following morning, the family planned on doing some horse riding at a ranch
close to where they were staying. The ranch was just over a mile away, via a
Forest Service road, and so Jennifer’s parents agreed to let her cycle the
distance on her bicycle. They waved as they passed her on the road. It would be
the last time they ever saw her alive.
When Jennifer did not arrive at the ranch, her parents went
looking for her and found her bicycle abandoned by the side of the road.
Jennifer’s mother then called the police and a search was immediately launched,
a helicopter called in, roadblocks set up. Since this was a suspected
kidnapping, the FBI was also alerted.
That same day, a man named Richard Bible arrived at his
brother’s home, not far from the abduction site. Bible was a habitual criminal
who had just recently been paroled from a sentence for abduction and sexual
assault. He was driving a dark-colored GMC Jimmy SUV, which he claimed he’d
borrowed from a friend but which his brother suspected might be stolen. As soon
as Bible left, his brother called the police, told them of his suspicions and described
the SUV.
The report was particularly interesting to officers
investigating Jennifer’s disappearance. Jennifer’s mother had reported seeing a
dark-colored Ford Blazer in the area at the time of her daughter’s
disappearance. To the untrained eye, a GMC Jimmy could easily be mistaken for a
Blazer. Moreover, a check into Bible’s background showed that he had a long
history of sexual offences.
At 6:20 that evening, a patrol officer spotted a GMC
matching the description of the suspect vehicle. When the officer turned on his
roof lights, the GMC immediately sped off.
A high-speed chase then ensued with the driver eventually abandoning the
vehicle and fleeing into the woods on foot. Richard Bible had to be flushed out
of hiding by a police dog.
Once in custody, Bible almost immediately confessed to
stealing the GMC. However, he categorically denied having anything to do with
Jennifer’s disappearance. He was then checked into the county lockup while his
clothes and the GMC were taken into evidence. Processing the vehicle, officers
found a strange assortment of items including numerous rubber bands, a case of
Suntory vodka miniatures with two bottles missing, and a “Dutch Masters” cigar
wrapper.
In the meanwhile, the search for Jennifer Wilson had intensified,
with a unit from Marine Corps Air Station Yuma brought in to assist the police.
Despite their efforts, Jennifer would remain missing until June 25, when hikers
walking a trail on Sheep Hill made a tragic discovery. Jennifer Wilson’s
decomposing corpse was found partly concealed under leaves and branches. She
was naked from the waist down and her hands were tied behind her back with a
shoelace. An autopsy would reveal that she’d been killed by three vicious blows
to the head, delivered with such force that they had caused multiple skull
fractures and a broken jaw. Although decomposition was too advanced for there
to be any trace of semen, the condition of the corpse strongly suggested that
Jennifer had been raped.
The crime scene also yielded a number of valuable clues,
clues that all but named the killer. There were several elastic bands, two
empty Suntory vodka miniature bottles, and an unsmoked Dutch Masters cigar.
Detectives had noticed exactly those items in the vehicle Richard Bible had been
driving. Additionally, there was plenty of fiber and hair evidence. Spots of
blood had also been found on Bible’s shirt, pants, and boots. Sent for DNA
testing, the blood produced a match to Jennifer Wilson.
