Serial Killers: Gordon Stewart Northcott

Born:  November 9, 1906 in Saskatchewan, Canada

Number of victims: 8 - 20 +

Date of murders: 1926 - 1928

Method of murder: Axe

Location: Riverside County, California

If you’ve seen the movie The Changeling, you already know the story of Gordon Stewart Northcott, a sadistic pedophile who raped and murdered a number of young boys in Riverside County, California in the 1920s.

A native of Canada, Northcott moved to California with his parents in 1924. There, he persuaded his father to buy a plot of land near Wineville, where he set up shop as a chicken farmer. However, this was just a cover for Northcott, his real interest was in abducting and raping young boys. To this extent, he enlisted the help of his teenaged nephew Sanford Clark, bringing the boy down from Canada on the pretext of working on the chicken ranch.

Between the years 1926 and 1928, a series of abductions of young boys occurred in Los Angeles and Riverside County, California. The LAPD, riddled with corruption and incompetence at the time, made very little effort to solve the crimes, labeling the missing boys as runaways. That was until Sanford Clark was picked up as an illegal immigrant and told police about a number of boys who had been held at the farm and subsequently murdered by Northcott.

With the police closing in Northcott fled to Canada, but was arrested there on September 19, 1928. He was subsequently found guilty on three counts of murder and hanged on October 2, 1930.

Serial Killers: Peter Manuel

Born:  March 15, 1927 in New York, NY

Number of victims: 8 - 18

Date of murders: 1956 - 1958

Method of murder: Shooting / Bludgeoning

Location: Scotland / England

Born in the United States to Scottish parents, Peter Manuel returned to the UK at age 5. As a child, he was constantly in trouble, culminating in his first jail term (for sexual assault) at the age of just 16. He served another prison term in England (for attempted rape) before moving to Glasgow, Scotland, in 1953.

Over a two year period, from January 1956 and 1958, a series of particularly brutal murders claimed the lives of eight people in and around Glasgow. Two of the incidents involved triple homicides carried out by a home invader. In these instances the killer shot the family to death, then spent days living in their homes, eating their food, even feeding their pets, while the bodies still lay there.

The police meanwhile were stymied, in the main due to their refusal to admit that the killings were linked and that a serial killer was responsible. This would only come to light when Manuel was arrested, after banknotes stolen from one of the homes was linked to him.

Taken into custody, Manuel quickly confessed to the triple homicides, plus the rape / murders of two young women and the shooting of a cab driver in Newcastle, England. He later admitted to a total of 18 murders.

Peter Manuel was hanged at Barlinnie prison in Glasgow on July 11, 1958.

Serial Killers: Henri Landru

Born:   April 12, 1869 in Paris, France

Number of victims: 11 proven, 28+ suspected

Date of murders: 1915 - 1919

Method of murder: Unknown, probably strangulation

Location: France

Henri Landru is France’s most notorious serial killer. A classic bluebeard, he employed an M.O. typical of that sub-genre of murderers, luring victims via matrimonial ads. Posing as an engineer of independent means, Landru placed these ads in the Paris newspapers and was able to attract a steady stream of wealthy, lovelorn widows. What exactly these women saw in the balding, bow-legged Landru in unknown. What is known is that, shortly after making his acquaintance, the women disappeared. Landru then took control of their money and personal effects.

Landru was exceedingly careful in his selection of victims, preferring women without close family ties. However, questions were eventually raised and Landru found himself in police custody. He, of course, denied any knowledge of the victims’ whereabouts. When a search of his property turned up no trace of the missing women, the police were forced to let him go.

The break in the case came two years later, when Landru’s neighbors recalled foul-smelling, black smoke that sometimes poured from the chimney of his villa. The police then carried out another search and this time found fragments of human bone in a large, pot-bellied stove.

The trial was a national sensation in France. Found guilty of 11 murders, Landru was guillotined on February 25, 1922.

Serial Killers: Patrick Kearney

Born:  September 24, 1939 in Los Angeles, California

Number of victims: 28+

Date of murders: 1977 - 1979

Method of murder: Shooting

Location: California

Known as the Trash Bag Killer, Patrick Kearney was a deadly necrophile who preyed on young men in southern California during the 1970’s. Standing at just 5-foot-five, the diminutive Kearney lacked the strength to overpower his (usually) bigger victims. To overcome this, he devised an ingenious M.O. He usually picked up his victims from gay bars or while they were hitchhiking. He would drive to a quiet stretch of road and while still steering his vehicle he’d produce a small pistol and fire a single bullet into the victim’s temple. An excellent shot, Kearney perfected the technique of firing one handed while keeping his other hand on the wheel.

With the victim now completely under his control, Kearney would rape the corpse. Afterwards, he’d dismember the body, wrap the separate pieces in plastic trash bags and dispose of them at different locations along the California freeway system.

At least 28 young men were murdered in this way before Kearney strayed from his proven M.O. and murdered a young boy who called at his home. Unfortunately for Kearney, the boy had told a neighbor where he was going and the police were soon knocking on Kearney’s door. Spooked by the police attention, Kearney fled with his lover, David Hill, to Texas, but later gave himself up to police.

Kearney entered guilty pleas to 28 murders in order to avoid the death penalty. He was sentenced to 28 life terms.

Serial Killers: Javed Iqbal

Born:  October 8, 1956 in Lahore, Pakistan

Number of victims: 100

Date of murders: 1988 - 1989

Method of murder: Strangulation

Location: Lahore, Pakistan

Javed Iqbal is not only one of the world’s most prolific serial killers, but there is no one on record who has claimed as many victims in as short a time. Working with three juvenile accomplices, Iqbal claimed a staggering 100 victims in just 5 months.

According to Iqbal’s later confession, his murder spree was triggered after he was severely beaten by two boys, putting him in a coma. The medical bills resulting from his injuries destroyed the previously wealthy Iqbal financially. To add insult to injury, the police declined to press charges against the boys, instead arresting Iqbal for sexual assault. Enraged, Iqbal swore vengeance.

Over the months that followed, he lured a succession of children to his apartment, all of them young boys living on the streets. Once there, the children would be raped, strangled and dismembered, their remains dissolved in acid.

Iqbal’s intention was always to murder 100 children. Once he reached that number, he sent a letter to a local newspaper confessing his crimes. He then disappeared but later handed himself over. Iqbal was sentenced to be tortured to death but opted to take the easy way out, hanging himself in his cell.

Serial Killer Video: Ted Bundy

Theodore Robert Bundy (a.k.a. Ted Bundy) is the most notorious serial killer in the annals of American crime. Charming, intelligent, and handsome on the outside, Bundy was a vicious necrophile and rapist who ranged across the country from Washington to Florida, brutalizing young women. At least 36 victims died at his hands, with some estimates running as high as 100+.

Ted Bundy was executed in Florida's electric chair in 1989.

Serial Killers: John George Haigh

Born:  July 24, 1909 in Stamford, Lincolnshire

Number of victims: 6

Date of murders: 1944 - 1949

Method of murder: Shooting / Bludgeoning

Location: London, England

The case of John George Haigh was a landmark in British legal history. Haigh was a cold-hearted murder-for-profit killer who claimed six victims, including his close friend and his friend’s parents. All of the victim’s corpses were dissolved in acid because Haigh erroneously believed that he could not be found guilty of murder in the absence of a body.

Haigh was arrested after his list victim, a wealthy widow named Olive Durand-Deacon, was linked to him. He initially denied murder, then changed tack and admitted to killing the elderly woman. “I have destroyed her with acid,” he taunted police. “How can you prove murder without a body?”

As it turned out, the murder could be proved and Haigh then tried for an insanity defense, claiming he was a vampire, who had killed his victims in order to drink their blood. It did him no good. Found guilty of murder, Haigh was sentenced to death. He was hanged at Wandsworth prison on August 10, 1949.

Serial Killers: Jack the Ripper

Number of victims: 5

Date of murders: August - November 1888

Method of murder: Strangulation / Stabbing

Location: London, England

The granddaddy of all serial killers, Saucy Jack terrorized the east end of London over nine bloody weeks during 1888. Jack was not the most prolific of killers by any means, claiming just five victims (some accounts list as many as 11), but such was the ferocity of his attacks that he sparked an unprecedented wave of terror in London and beyond. The victims had their throats cut, their abdomens ripped open and in some cases their internal organs removed from the scene. The fiend also taunted the police in a series of infamous letters.

Jack’s final murder was his most vicious of all. Irish prostitute Mary Kelly was literally torn apart, her breasts and internal organs excised and placed on a bedside table, chunks of flesh hacked from her thighs. Then, with the world’s media blasting out lurid headlines about this latest outrage, the Ripper disappeared, never to be heard from again.

Over a century has passed since the Jack the Ripper murders, but Jack still holds a morbid fascination over us. Many theories exist as to his identity but it is unlikely that we will ever know who he was.

Serial Killers: Kendall Francois

Born:  July 26, 1971 in Poughkeepsie, New York

Number of victims: 8

Date of murders: 1996 - 1998

Method of murder: Strangulation

Location: Poughkeepsie, New York

Between October 1996 and August 1998, eight young women went missing from  the streets of Poughkeepsie, New York and its surrounds. All of the women were habitual drug users and most were prostitutes so, at first, the police believed that they had simply left the area and moved on. However, under pressure from the missing women’s families, the police began to look into the disappearances and soon discovered that the victims bore a startling resemblance to each other - all of the women were white, slightly built and with short brown hair.

Further investigations led to the identification of a suspect, Kendal Francois, a hulking black man who was known to rough up the local prostitutes. Francois was placed under surveillance but did nothing to raise suspicion. The police, in any case, did not consider him a strong suspect as serial killers seldom kill outside their own racial group.

Then, on September 1, 1998, the case virtually resolved itself when a prostitute reported to police that Francois had assaulted her at his home on 99 Fulton Avenue. A search warrant was obtained and police called on the house, which Francois shared with his grandparents and sister, that same afternoon. They were immediately overcome by the stench of putrefaction and soon traced its source - eight decomposing bodies were found in the attic.

Kendall Francois was sentenced to 8 consecutive life sentences on August 11, 2000. He died in prison on September 11, 2014, aged 43.

Serial Killers: Kenneth Erskine

Born:  July 1963 in London, England

Number of victims: 7 confirmed, 11 suspected

Date of murders: April to July 1986

Method of murder: Strangulation

Location: London, England

A burglar and petty criminal, Kenneth Erskine turned to murder in the summer months of 1987, targeting the elderly residents of Stockwell, a neighborhood in south London. He followed a familiar M.O., using his burglary skills to enter apartments at night. Once inside, he would strangle the occupant to death before sodomizing the corpse. He’d then ransack the apartment, stealing any cash and valuables.

As the death toll continued to mount, the media began referring to the mystery fiend as the ‘Stockwell Strangler’ and the police were left in no doubt that a single perpetrator was responsible due to a bizarre ritual that he performed at the crime scenes. Before leaving, he would tuck his victims up in bed and fold their arms across their chests.

Erskine was eventually identified as the killer when the police lifted his prints from one of the crime scenes. He was arrested as he stood in line waiting to collect a social security payment.

Found guilty on seven counts of murder, Erskine was sentenced to life in prison. He was subsequently diagnosed with a mental disorder and moved to the maximum security Broadmoor Hospital, where he remains to this day.

Serial Killer Video: Randy Kraft - The Scorecard Killer

Randolph Steven "Randy" Kraft was one of the most vicious serial killers in American history, responsible for the rape, torture, mutilation and murder of as many as 67 young men between 1972 and 1983. Many of his victims were US Marines. Kraft kept a coded list documenting each of his murders, hence his nickname, the Scorecard Killer.

Serial Killers: Dean Corll

Born: December 24, 1939 in in Fort Wayne, Indiana

Number of victims: 27+

Date of murders: 1970 - 1973

Method of murder: Strangulation / Shooting

Location: Houston, Texas

A brutal torturer and rapist of teenaged boys,  Dean Corll started out by using his family’s candy business to lure his young victims, hence his nickname, the Candyman. Later, Corll evolved his M.O. by recruiting two teenaged accomplices, David Owen Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley.

Corll offered Brooks and Henley financial inducements to bring him victims. The pair responded by luring friends and acquaintances to Corll’s apartment, on the pretense of attending a party. Once there, Corll would overpower the boy, strap him to a torture board and then sodomize and torture him, sometimes keeping the victim alive for days. Henley also participated in these sessions and may even have killed some of the victims. The bodies would later be buried at a number of locations, most notably a boat shed rented by Corll.

On August 8, 1973, Henley brought two friends, a male and a female, to Corll’s residence. The homosexual Corll was enraged at Henley for bringing a girl into his home and the pair started arguing. Corll pulled a gun and in the ensuing struggle, he was shot and killed. Henley then called the police.

In custody, Henley broke down and confessed to a killing spree that had claimed 27 young lives. He and Brooks later led police to the boat shed and other burial sites.

Serial Killers: Rodney Alcala

Born:  August 23, 1943 in San Antonio, Texas

Number of victims: 5 confirmed, believed to be over 100

Date of murders: 1971 - 1979

Method of murder: Beating / Strangulation

Location: Washington / California / New York

A typical sexual predator, Rodney Alcala used his good looks and smooth line of talk to lure unwitting females. Alcala had an incredibly cruel way of killing his victims. He’d toy with them, strangling them until they lost consciousness, then reviving them and strangling them again, repeating the process several times before he eventually made the kill.

At the height of his killing spree, Alcala appeared on the television show, The Dating Game, winning a date with a female contestant. The woman, however, refused to go out with him, saying she found him creepy. Quite possibly, that decision saved her life. Investigators speculate that Alcala may have claimed over 100 victims.

Alcala was eventually arrested for the murder of Robin Samsoe, a 12-year-old girl from Huntington Beach, California, who disappeared while on her way to ballet class on June 20, 1979. Her decomposing body was found 12 days later in the Los Angeles foothills. A search of Alcala’s apartment turned up hundreds of polaroids of young women, some of them sexually explicit. Most of these women have never been identified and the police believe some may have been murdered.

Rodney Alcala was eventually convicted of the murders of Robin Samsoe and four other women, earning him the death penalty. He currently awaits execution at San Quentin.

Serial Killers: Richard Ramirez

Born:  February 29, 1960 in El Paso, Texas

Number of victims: 16+

Date of murders: 1984 - 1985

Method of murder: Shooting / Stabbing / Beating

Location: California

Over a thirteen-month period, from June 1985 to August 1986, the residents of Los Angeles County were terrorized by a vicious killer who went by the terrifying epithet, the Night Stalker. The Stalker would eventually be identified as Richard Ramirez, a high school dropout and professed Satanist who had moved to California from El Paso, Texas.

Ramirez almost always employed the same M.O. He’d break into his victims’ homes after dark, usually in the early morning hours. He’d then dispatch any male occupant with a single gunshot to the head, leaving him free to carry out his sick fantasies on the female, raping and brutalizing the unfortunate woman over a prolonged period. Often he’d kill her, but a number of his victims survived and their descriptions left police in no doubt that the same perpetrator was responsible.

As the city of Los Angeles descended into a state of virtual siege, Ramirez attempted one audacious crime too many - be tried to steal a car in East LA in broad daylight and was caught by the owner and some of his friends. Ramirez was severely beaten, the police arriving just in time to save his life.

Tried on thirteen counts of murder, Ramirez was sentenced to death on November 7, 1989. He died in prison of complications arising from B-cell lymphoma on June 7, 2013.

Serial Killers: John Wayne Gacy

Born:  March 17, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois

Number of victims: 33

Date of murders: 1972 - 1978

Method of murder: Strangulation

Location: Chicago, Illinois

An outwardly respectable businessman who was active in charitable and political causes, John Wayne Gacy was in fact the depraved torture slayer of 33 boys and young men. Using the cover of his contracting business, Gacy would lure his young victims back to his house  in the Chicago suburbs with promises of work. Once there, he’d overpower them and handcuff them to his “torture board.” He’d then subject the unfortunate victim to hours of rape and sexual torture before strangling him to death. The body would then be consigned to a shallow grave in the crawlspace under his house.

Gacy eventually came to the attention of police in December 1978, after 15-year-old Des Plaines high school sophomore, Robert Piest, disappeared. Police investigations revealed that Gacy had offered the boy a job shortly before his disappearance. After two more missing teens were also linked to Gacy, the police obtained a search warrant for his property. They were unprepared for what they found, 29 decomposing corpses, interred in shallow graves. It later emerged that Gacy had disposed of four more victims, including Robert Piest, in the Des Plaines River.

At trial, Gacy attempted an insanity defense but was found guilty of 12 murders and sentenced to death. He was executed by lethal injection on May 10, 1994.

Serial Killers: Joel Rifkin

Born: January 20, 1959 in New York City

Number of victims: 9 - 17

Date of murders: 1989 - 1993

Method of murder: Strangulation / Bludgeoning

Location: New York City, NY

The archetypal loser, Joel Rifkin was still living at home with his mother when he committed his first murder. The victim, known only as Susie, was a prostitute who he bludgeoned to death after she demanded drugs from him. Rifkin then dismembered the corpse and disposed of the body parts at locations across New York and New Jersey.

So began the most prolific serial murder series in New York’s history. Over the next four years Rifkin took to cruising Brooklyn and Manhattan for prostitutes. He’d usually bring them back to him home in East Meadow, Long Island, where he’d have sex with them before strangling them to death. Then he’d cut up the bodies and dispose of them.

Although several of the dismembered corpses were found, the police had no idea who the killer might be. Then, on June 28, 1993, police patrolmen spotted a pickup driving along the highway without a licence plate. Rifkin was ordered to pulled over but fled. He was eventually captured after a wild, half hour chase. In the back of the truck, police found the decomposing corpse of his latest victim.

Joel Rifkin was found guilty of nine murders and sentenced to 203 years to life.

Number of victims: 17

Date of murders: 1978 - 1991

Method of murder: Strangulation / Bludgeoning / Stabbing

Location: Ohio / Wisconsin

A horrendously depraved necrophile and cannibal, Dahmer cruised Milwaukee’s gay bars looking for victims. He’d lure the man back to his apartment with the promise of sex or money. Once there, he’d incapacitate the victim with a drugged drink before strangling him to death and having sex with the dead body. He’d then dismember the corpse and dispose of it in a vat of acid.

As Dahhmer’s M.O. evolved, he took to keeping parts of the bodies, including skulls, hearts and penises, as souvenirs. He also cannibalized several of his victims. Then he became obsessed with creating “zombie” love slaves and started drilling holes into the skulls of living victims and injecting acid into their frontal lobes.

Dahmer was eventually caught after one of his victims managed to escape and alerted the police. He was sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms in 1992. However, he would survive only two years behind bars. On November 28, 1994, Dahmer was beaten to death by fellow inmate Christopher Scarver.
